New Billing Code to Cover Costs of Covid-19 Safety Precautions

Are you feeling burdened by the cost and time required to follow the necessary precautions to protect your staff and patients from Covid-19? Good news for ABA, speech and occupational therapy and behavioral health providers! A new billing opportunity is coming.

The American Medical Association (AMA) has released new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes to allow for the billing of Covid-19 related precautions. CPT Code 99072 is the relevant new code that is being added for private practices, office settings, and other non-facility services. This code will help cover the cost of additional supplies and clinical time to perform safety measures.

For reference, the AMA lists the details for the new CPT code as follows:
99072 “Additional supplies, materials, and clinical staff time over and above those usually included in an office visit or other non-facility service(s), when performed during a Public Health Emergency as defined by law, due to respiratory-transmitted infectious disease” (AMA, 2020)

Code 99072 is to be billed only one time per patient encounter per provider identification number, regardless of the total number of units or time rendered at that encounter. This code is available regardless of the patient’s diagnosis, but only during a state of public emergency related to respiratory infectious disease.

New CPT codes take some time for payers to adopt. Payers may also specify rates, required documentation, and authorization standards specific to CPT codes.
